Perhaps just keeping it cultivated would tend to make it more appealing. No rainforests, please! Similar to a man's facial hair--a beard needs to be kept neat and trimmed and shaped in order to keep from looking like a scrounge or a bum. Of course, it sounds as though that may be a look you are attracted to (hippie or disheveled, not necessarily a bum), and if so, then have at it.
